What this is

Sooner or Later is a one-man musical for an older actor. It follows a man whose life has been built on holding things together, systems, rooms, people, while quietly postponing the one thing he cannot repair.

The story does not rush. It loops. It delays. And still, time moves.

These recordings are demo sketches created to communicate melody, lyric, rhythm, and dramatic placement. They are not intended to represent final arrangements, orchestration, or performance style.

The role is written for a performer in the later stages of life. Vocals are spoken-sung, conversational, and grounded in thought rather than projection. Songs arise from memory, habit, and resistance. They are not presented as numbers and are never performed for display.

How the music functions

The songs are not performances. They are interruptions. They arrive when speech fails, when thought stalls, or when memory intrudes without permission.

The guitar is present onstage throughout — not as a virtuoso instrument, but as a working companion. Something held. Something familiar. Something used. The material does not require advanced technique; a simple, instinctive relationship to the instrument is sufficient, with flexibility built into rehearsal.

Within the show, songs operate as interruptions to speech, moments of looping, or places where thought briefly becomes organised. They do not pause the action — they are the action.

Staging & scale

The production is designed for minimal staging: a single space, a chair, and a guitar. Lighting and sound carry time, pressure, and internal movement. The performer carries everything else.
